Richard Healy

Like many of my generation I grew up playing video games, reading comics and watching Hollywood films. I attempt to recreate on canvas the drama and suspense these mediums convey to the viewer.

My work is primarily based around the figure and alluding to the sinister. I aim to create scenes in which something is about to happen or has just happened, the moment of consideration before, or after an action. Unlike a comic or a film in which the structure is controlled tightly so to create one reading of an image, I aim to create images which allow for multiple interpretations. The works are intended to have a sense of ambiguity, and allow for enough space so the viewer can draw their own narratives and conclusions.

I try to combine a wide range of techniques and mediums - acrylic, pencil, charcoal, oil, aerosol and ink. My work brings aspects of street art, comic imagery and drama, and traditional figurative art together onto one canvas.

ARTIST STATEMENT 'WIP' (Work in Progress)' 2018 – Richard Healy

Healy explores situations, relationships and what it is to be human. Using digital collage as a starting point, Healy re-contextualizes his source material to construct images of people in ambiguous situations, leading the viewer to question.

Healy brings reality and fiction, time and space, onto a single canvas, creating anxiety and uneasiness, challenging preconceptions. The paintings toe the line somewhere between figuration and abstraction, provoking a sinister sense of unease as the figures constantly lead your eyes around the pictures.

ARTIST STATEMENT 'reincarnation' 2018 - Richard Healy

Healy’s works depict scenes of figures and bodies, in the midst of movement or action - obstructed and broken creating a tension and ambiguity on the canvas. Using digital collage as a starting point he has re-contextualised (reincarnated) his source material to create new narratives.

In these works by pulling apart his original source material, Healy obstructs the narrative and blurs the line between figuration and abstraction. Creating images that ultimately lean more towards abstraction and horror than any direct narrative.
