Di Cubitt

My current body of work explores my concerns about our experience and relationship to the landscape we inhabit and visit. In particular I am drawn to how memory, myths and the imagination affect our perception and emotional attachment to certain places. The paintings are developed over time through revisiting and walking in the landscapes of the south west of WA. Working from a mixture of photographs and memory, the final works draw on a combination of felt experience and mixed memories translated through paint into images that are part memory and part imagination.

ARTIST STATEMENT 'WIP' (Work in Progress) 2018 - Di Cubitt

The works selected for this exhibition are part on an ongoing exploration of the thoughts that spring up on long walks in various regions and National parks of the South west of WA, a reflective meditation on what it is that changes these environments. We may stumble across the result of these changes - or never know they have taken place - but long after we have gone, and they have stopped making their mark on us, they will still be leaving their mark on the world.

ARTIST STATEMENT 'reincarnation' 2018 - Di Cubitt

The paintings for this exhibition come out of my current explorations of our perceptions of spending time in nature and the landscapes we frequent and revisit. The works draw on a combination of the experience and memory of spending time in a variety of West Australian landscapes, influenced by imagination and myth. In particular for these paintings, I am exploring the power that water has to destroy, reshape and give life to our environments.

In each work, I have attempted to offer a different perspective into those ideas.

Rivers feed the land they travel through, frequently flood, break their banks and during the course of their journey towards the sea, reshape the landscapes they flow through. Island shows new life emerging from the rocks in the middle of the river, an opportunity for regeneration of what was before.

City Park references a lake in a landscaped park, reshaped and re-formed by human design. The algae that floats on the surface moves around the lake, revealing a hint of what was once there in the shadows and reflections. A past in which existed ancient trees and wetlands, lost to concrete and manicured lawns.

Here and there offers the prospect of a newly built landscape, shaped by imagination and the fallible memory of what may have been before. Plants that don’t belong or are unsuited to the new environment hover on the brink of life sustained only by water.

  • Wed 15 Aug - Sun 02 Sep 2007 'Liquid Thought' - Di Cubitt

My inspiration for these works in my first solo exhibition stems from my interest in how we perceive the elemental forces of our world, such as the movement of wind, thermals, air pressure and so on. These phenomena are more often felt than seen, but the marks left on the materials they come in contact with are a visible reminder of their existence.
