ARTIST STATEMENT 'WIP' (Work in Progress)' 2018 - Alex Maciver

These paintings for are part of a series titled Schemes that question the integrity of segregation on the bases of class or economic status. ‘Scheme’ is defined as a plan, design or program of action to be followed but it can also mean to plot a devious plan, to be shady or otherwise use intellectual power to deceive or carry out a plan for personal interest. In ‘Scheme’ the outcome is a series of layered paints that is a clear reflection of the process undertaken. There is not enough diagnostic information in the individual detailing to clearly determine this work as portraiture, landscape, still life or architectural plans, yet something about the overall organisation of the image, the gestalt, is still allowing us to recognise restraint and separation. Without providing a pithy aphorism, the spontaneous gestures are restricted by a black outline at parts, almost as if commentary around considered chaos, or restricted movement. The hard black outline is representative of hard edge, structure, rules and regulations. Also could refer to the trap of the poverty cycle. There is an apparent layering of paints and mixture of textures that represent the many complexities of the human condition that are not considered in situational bias.

ARTIST STATEMENT 'reincarnation' 2018 - Alex Maciver

Although the origins of the notion of reincarnation are obscure, Maciver's layered painting and sculptural work challenge the preconceived ideals imposed by societal trends.

These works position the viewer to focus on prejudiced difficulties imposed on individuals through unjust societal norms and hold responsible the actions and emotions of an individual in their current lifetime.

  • Wed 07 Aug - Sat 14 Sep 2019 'HOLD ON' - Alex Maciver & Sam Bloor

Through a series of mixed media paintings and sculptural installations, the works in HOLD ON draw influence from subculture, anarchy, protests and stereotyping. The artists — each through their lens’ of influence and experience — individually experiment with layering of text, texture and image which represent the complexities and agitations arising from their cultural observations.

Maciver enlists a bold, abstracted style in his works which are accompanied by a series of floor standing sculptures, whilst Bloor mixes more formal text-based works, with banners, iconography and space altering installation treatments.
