Shana James

Shana James is an artist and printmaker with a life-long interest in visual storytelling and over 30 years experience making and exhibiting. She is fascinated by classical fairy tales, poetry, dreams and the natural world, her artwork represents humans and animals alive and active in unexpected, fantastic surroundings presenting a poetic interpretation of contemporary life. The mundane juxtaposed with the meaningful, reminding us of the mystery and wonder which is present in even the most ordinary life. James is well known for her Alice in Wonderland related works which use the story as a critical lens to explore ideas to do with choices, decision making and self-actualisation.

James completed a Bachelor of Fine Art in 1989 at Curtin University and a Master of Arts in Visual Art at Edith Cowan University in 2021.She has works in recognised collections including Kerry Stokes, Artbank and Monash University. She currently lectures in Printmaking Studio Practice at Curtin University and also at North Metropolitan TAFE.
