Shana James

Shana James is a Perth-based artist and printmaker whose work explores visual storytelling through metaphor and magic realism. Drawing inspiration from literature, mythology, fairy tales, dreams, and the natural world, she creates imagery where the ordinary meets the fantastical, inviting viewers to rediscover the mystery and wonder in everyday life.

James is known for her Alice in Wonderland-inspired works, which use the story as a lens to explore themes of choice, decision-making, and self-actualisation. More recently, she has been inspired by the figure of Circe, weaving mythological narratives into her practice to examine ideas of transformation and female agency. With over 30 years of experience and eleven solo exhibitions, her work offers poetic, layered narratives that speak to contemporary life.

She holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from Curtin University and a Master of Arts in Visual Art from Edith Cowan University. Her work is represented in significant collections including Artbank, Monash University, Kerry Stokes, The West Australian Ministry for Culture and the Arts, and The WA Water Corporation. In addition to her artistic practice, James lectures in Printmaking Studio Practice at Curtin University and North Metropolitan TAFE.
