Look Out
2025 Drawing Graphite on Somerset 100% Cotton Paper, Framed 96 x 76cm
In this drawing, I imagine Circe observing a lone boat close to her island. The boat represents both possibility and peril. After years of solitude, she at first welcomes sailors for their company, drawn to the excitement of connection. But encounters with cruel and violent men teach her to be wary. To protect herself, Circe wields her magic, transforming threatening sailors into pigs — a powerful act of self-preservation.
The title Look Out carries a double meaning. Circe stands at a physical lookout, a high vantage point from which she can glimpse what is coming. Yet it is also a warning: as a woman alone, she must constantly look out for danger, guarding herself against those who might seek to overpower her.
Inspired by Madeline Miller’s novel Circe, this work reflects the tension between desire and danger, isolation and autonomy, that defines Circe’s story.
