VARIATION - Sangsug Kim

VARIATION presents a body of work that explores relationships formed across people, place, and time. The exhibition considers how connections emerge not from isolated entities, but through encounters and interactions between different beings.

Within this framework, relationships are understood not as fixed conditions but as ongoing processes—continuously generated, dissolved, and transformed. Boundaries, likewise, are not stable structures but fluid states that are formed, undone, and continually shifting within these relational flows.

A key conceptual element in the works is the idea of the “fold,” understood as a trace that forms when different beings meet and interact. Rather than functioning as a singular formal language, the fold operates as a conceptual element through which the accumulation of time and relationships becomes visible.

Place is approached as a site where relationships are formed and where experiences accumulate. The houses and landscapes within the works do not refer to specific locations, but instead function as open spaces onto which the viewer’s memories and experiences can be projected.

Time is understood not as something that simply passes, but as something that accumulates and coexists. Although the past cannot be revisited, it continues to connect with the present and extends toward the future through ongoing relational processes.

Among these relationships, those between people form the most intimate and complex layers. This includes not only relationships with others, but also internal processes through which individuals come to understand themselves and the world. Through these exchanges, identities are shaped, while boundaries are both reinforced and dissolved.

The title VARIATION encapsulates this approach. Life may be understood as a process unfolding around a theme that cannot be fully defined, generating multiple variations over time. Each work emerges from different moments and relationships, yet together they form a continuous flow shaped by accumulation, interaction, and change.
