Remedy - Artist Statement by Britt Mikkelsen

Having always been fascinated with organic forms, it was inevitable that my practice would lead me to explore the human body.  For the last few years, I have been preoccupied with taking care of my family.  My daughter, mother, father and sister all have serious medical issues, as do I.  Some are life threatening.  As such, many a day and night has been spent in hospital waiting rooms and at bedsides. 

This journey has taken a significant emotional, psychological and physical toll on me and my family. However, through my arts practice I have been able to process the many emotions that have arisen during this time.

This exhibition is a catharsis of sorts, an attempt to understand the complexities of our bodies; our weaknesses, but also the unbelievable strength of us as humans. These artworks study the function of the human body, our emotions and our pain. 

I strive to honour these themes with beauty, strength and stoicism as my guide.
