Michelle Hyland
Michelle Hyland is an artist who responds to the urban landscape she moves through, noting with curiosity the overlooked and discarded. Moving between Rome and Perth, she is drawn to the kerbside corners where objects pause, briefly suspended between use and landfill.
Working mainly in painting, drawing, and printmaking, Hyland creates semi-representational compositions shaped from remnants of the everyday. Her surfaces hold shadows of renewal stories ripe for reinvention and reuse. Remnants of life regain meaning given the space to reemerge through her artworks.
Her practice is one of translating found assemblages by layering marks and shapes, referencing her photographic documentation of sites, to propose potential connections. Informed by a lifelong love of making, a sense of wonder cultivated in a free-range childhood, developing a playful approach that taught her to prize possibility in the discarded.
Hyland’s work turns toward themes of impermanence, renewal, and the subtle beauty of the everyday. She follows the fleeting – the quiet shift of shape, the humble hinge of a moment – and asks how ordinary materials might whisper new meanings if given space to speak.
Her ongoing goals include deepening her investigation of contemporary urban environments, expanding her studio practice internationally and to continue creating work that invites viewers to notice the fragile, fertile spaces where things fall apart and begin again.
